Alfie Evans case

Alfie Evans

Alfie Evans has been in hospital since December 2016 who has a terminal illness that is a "rare undiagnosed degenerative neurological condition".

He has been in a coma for around a year and there has been debates saying whether his machine that keeps him alive, should be turned off or kept on. Some people argue it should be turned off as he isn't really living life as he is in a coma and the nice thing to do would let him go to a better place where as others see that as cruel and that he should carry living to see if he makes it.

In my opinion it should be the parents choice in the end whether he should be kept alive or not however when they wen't to court the judges ruled that the machine should be turned of but the parents and even "the Pope" disagree.

He has been going back and fourth with his illness because the parents were told he isn't going to make it however he did improve and was able to start breathing by himself but caught a chest infection and was put on a ventilator.

Alfies parents are going to appeal to the supreme court again to move Alfie to Italy to get treatment. I think this should be allowed because by denying this you are keeping a baby/ toddler in a coma waiting for treatment that may never arrive so I think they should allow him to get this treatment to beat the illness and come back.

The parents Mr Evans and Kate James lost the legal fights in the high court and the court of Appeal. All appeals have been rejected by the supreme court and Lord Justice Davies said doctors had agreed that there is no hope. He also said that "We cannot have a kind of legal 'Groundhog Day' where you come back again and again and again on the same point."

Overall I think this is wrong because there wouldn't be a "legal groundhog day" if they allowed Alfie to be moved and treated. As they aren't doing anything he is going to be in a coma and waiting for a miracle to happen whereas if he got treatment he has a better shot at living a better life than what he has currently.
